This might be my favorite way of repurposing used wine corks. (besides the wine cork mulch idea) Instead of using predictable store bought charms, name tags or different colored ribbons, I used different winery corks for my wine tags. The next time you have a party and don’t want to run out of glasses, this is the perfect thing to have on hand. Everyone will know which glass is theirs by their wine maker. It’s also a great conversation starter. Everyone can chat about their particular winery and if and what they drink from there, etc…

 TUTORIAL HERE
  • I think making a dozen of these and putting them in a clear bag or decorative chinese take out box would be a great gift! Think hostess gift, thank you, co-workers, neighbors, mother-in-law, boss, brother, teacher, me…well you get the idea.
  • If you plan on doing a trip to the wine country, you could collect all your different corks and make tags from them. Then when you use them, you’ll think back on the good memories you had on that special vacation

backyard remodel continued.

The best time to get deals on outdoor furniture and accessories is now! (most stores are having their end of season sales) We wanted an outdoor rug to make the dining room under the pergola a little more cozy feeling. I found some fabulous rugs with bold colors and patterns. However when I was at Target recently shopping for sundries, I stumbled across their summer clearance sale. Of course I had to browse and see what they had. I saw this neural gray tone rug made for outside. Although it was nothing like I had originally envisioned, it called out to me. Then I looked at the price tag and it was only $12.99! I knew instantly we were meant to be…

We’ve been posting a slow progression of our mini backyard remodel the last few months. First phase Second phase Third Phase Fourth phase

In the back corner of our yard we had a funky spot under the new pergola. It’s hidden and doesn’t get foot traffic. Of course we’re trying to do this project on a tight budget so we decided to just put some inexpensive pavers down. Ry (a.k.a. my hubby) and Spence (a.k.a. my son) went to town cutting and fitting the pavers. This was a learning experience for Spencer, but he did great. Sometimes it’s just easier to do projects or tasks ourselves but I have to remind myself now and then… “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”

After laying the pavers down it was time to apply the Polymeric sand. Basically as you see in the photo above you sweep the sand into the crevices between the pavers. Directions may vary product to product but our next step was to hose it down then wait 20 minutes. This step was repeated several times.

We cut some corners since this area has no foot traffic (we didn’t do the 2 inch layers of decomposed granite underneath) so our pavers are not 100% level but we like that. It really gives it an old world Tuscan feel. This project was about 50 sq. feet and took about a half a day. We’re really happy with the end results considering this isn’t a major overhaul remodel.

As promised before and coming soon:

- Ryan’s garden beds

–My “not so typical” herb garden

–Ryan’s latest recycling idea. What do you do with an old mattress?

This is my easy brie cheese appetizer. As a side note, I don’t eat cheese except for brie and nacho cheese. (the kind you find at the movies) I know it’s a little weird. What can I say? I’m a little weird. Anyhoo, you and your fortunate guests will gobble these up! They’re so easy to make and delicious. One evening I had day old bread and some left over brie. I thought, “Hhhmmm, what can I make besides the obvious just brie and bread?” I had plenty of fresh herbs in my garden and I had a red onion in the fridge. Thats when the brieasy was born…Buon Appetito! Recipe here.

Tip:

These go fast…make plenty!

Sangria I say! The beauty of Sangria lies in the fact that in spite of being exotic and delicious, it is incredibly easy to make. There are thousands of different recipes. No joke! Almost every restaurant has it’s own “secret sangria”. Through trial and error I have come up with my own simple recipe. It’s so refreshing, fruity and light. Once you make this you’ll wonder why you haven’t before. Not only does it taste amazing, it is very easy on your wallet as well. I promise this is going to become your “go to” party drink!

Nellene’s sangria recipe here

Warning: Sip slowly…it can knock you off your feet! The alcohol content is much higher than just having a glass of wine. Overnight the sugars, wine and gin/vodka ferment getting stronger making a pitcher of WOW!

Fun Facts:

–Rioja region, the wine region of Spain is considered to be the place where Sangria was born.

–It first became popular in the 1800´s when fruit punch was served at most aristocratic parties.

–Sangria has become word’s popular drink since it was introduced to the world at New York World’s trade fair held in 1964.

I love Chinese food but it doesn’t really love me. Okay, sorry TMI… The good news is I found a super healthy and easy beef with broccoli recipe. I just made it the other night and even my “picky” 16 year old son said it was better than any restaurant! It’s a simple dinner that is packed full of flavor. I think I’ve solved your “what’s for dinner?” dilema for today. Find the recipe here.

Tips:

–Use brown rice to make it extra friendly on your waistline.

–I used a little more soy sauce then the recipe called for.

–Don’t over cook the broccoli for better texture and flavor.

–Double the recipe and have left overs for lunches or dinner the next night. (that’s what I did)

–I don’t love ginger so next time I will cut the amount in half. However I know it’s needed to add the necessary flavor profiles. If you like it, don’t change a thing!

–Use chopsticks to make dinner seem a little extra special/authentic.

–If you want to make this for company, a party or even a picnic, buy cool Chinese boxes and serve the beef with broccoli in them individually. Attach chopsticks and a cookie on top of the box with raffia/twine. You can find a large variety of patterned and different sizes of Chinese boxes at craft stores such as Michaels and party supply stores like Party City.

Five things to do in San Diego under five bucks!

Money doesn’t buy happiness.” I’d like to add “it doesn’t buy fun either”! Tips:

–Google your city name with words like, free, fun, weekend, entertainment, movies, music, etc…and you will find a ton of cool stuff. You might have to sift through the junk a little.

–Have a contest with your friends or family members (kids especially) to see who comes up with the best idea/option. Then you’ll have a stock pile for the summer!

Ok, it’s not really but why can’t we pretend and just do it anyway! Since my “Brown Bag a Free Trip to Hawaii” post, I’ve been getting a lot of requests of what to put in those bags. Here are a few suggestions that are not only healthy, but very tasty! Bon Appetito!

Brown Bag Lunch

1. Pesto Grilled Chicken Sandwich

–bread choice (french or wheat roll, pita, Italian bread)

–grilled chicken breast (make a few grilled chicken breasts ahead, we will use another in a    salad)

–lettuce or sprouts and tomato

–pesto (store bought at Trader Joes or local market)

Put the sandwich together (put a dash of salt and pepper on too) and “Pesto!”, you’ve got a gourmet sandwich!  Pack a mini fruit cup with strawberries and apple slices to round off your meal.

2. Not Your Typical Tuna Salad Sandwich

–bread of choice (english muffin for a little twist)

–small can of white tuna packed in water

–light mayo, salt and pepper

- radishes for your crunch and a little spice

–avocado

–lettuce or sprouts

Mix the tuna and mayo together. Season with salt and pepper. Assemble sandwich with tuna, then radishes and then avocado. Pack baked tortilla chips and salsa as your side and a piece of fruit such as a banana.

3. Chicken and Pesto Pasta Salad

–1 cup uncooked farfalle pasta, spiral or penne pasta

–1 cup cut up grilled chicken breast

–1/2 cup cherry tomatoes

–1 tbsp pitted kalamata olives

–3 tablespoons of pesto (remember you still have some from your sandwich earlier in week)

Mix it all together, add s & p to taste and you have a fresh, gourmet tasting salad. Maybe bring a piece of dark chocolate as your treat today.

4. Chicken Pitas

- mix 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar,1 tsp oil packed sun-dried tomatoes and it’s oil, 1 minced small garlic glove and a dash of salt & pepper. (to your liking)

–then add to above mixture, 2 cups shredded chicken, 1/2 cup chopped fresh tomato, 1/4 cup asiago cheese and 1/4 cup fresh chopped basil (if you want a little kick of heat add a dash of red pepper flakes)

–this is enough for 2–3 pitas. stuff the pitas with the chicken mixture and some greens of your choice such as a nice Italian mix

–you’re not limited to using pita, it works great in a tortilla wrap or any type of bread

–Pack some fresh fruit such as grapes and you have a perfect meal.

TIP:

A few of the recipes above make more than one serving. Double up and just make 2 or 3 of the recipes for the week. Notice pesto is used twice and chicken 3 times to make it a little easier.

Don’t be surprised if you lost a few lbs by the end of the week. These are very healthy and energy producing meals! Eat and enjoy guilt free.

In case you’re wondering, my favorite is the pesto chicken sandwich. If you don’t have chicken available, substitute turkey from the deli. I try to use wheat bread to be healthy, but once in a while a great Italian roll is soooo good with this recipe!

No, I’m not going to tell you to pack your bags and head to Florence Italy, although that would do the trick too!

I have one word for you…Tripadvisor! (no I do not own stock in them, no I do not gain financially in any way, shape or form) I truly love this site! Tripadvisor has been my “go to” guide for everything travel. Although this site can help with finding deals, I mainly use it for reviews.  I have never been let down by a false review, although I’m sure there is always room for fraud in this world. I honestly thought everyone knew about this site, but I’m learning many of you haven’t. So here’s how it can help.

1) Get reviews on everything from hotels to restaurants to spas.

2) My favorite, ask questions in forums. For example, if I’m torn between 2 hotel choices I post my dilemmas in the forum and people always respond with great feedback. Let’s say I can only splurge on one great restaurant, I ask which one is the best. The community in the forum is truly awesome on this site!

3) Get deals. After deciding on your hotel, you can type in your dates and it will connect you to all the top discount sites showing you their prices. It’s like one stop shopping! I love this feature.

You can even create free slideshows! This travel site is jam packed with goodies to explore. I highly encourage you to check it out to help you plan your next getaway. It has made my vacations better and better every time! Don’t forget to “play ;) it forward” and contribute reviews too…

Tips:

You can read the “profile of the reviewer” to help you decide if you think their advice is good. For example: If someone from the United States is commenting on how small a room in Paris is, they might not know that’s pretty much the norm! Whereas the person from Germany is saying how roomy the hotel is probably has a better take on the reality of European hotels. If you’re torn between 2 reviews, one saying it’s great and the other not, focus on their profiles to see which one better matches your lifestyle and interests. Another great added bonus is many times you can contact the person directly through Tripadvisor and ask more specific questions regarding their review or stay. The awesomeness is endless!!

When posting in a forum, be sure to mention the occasion for your travels such as a honeymoon. That will help people give the best advice and recommendations possible.

What’s the catch? Here it goes and anybody can do it…Start packing your lunches and start eating dinner at home more. Obviously this concept isn’t new or rocket science. However I promise the money you will save will get you a trip to Hawaii or whatever destination you’re dreaming about. I stumbled across this cool lunch savings calculator (why not use it for dinner too) that opened my eyes to how much I could save by making balanced changes. Below is an example of how I can cut back and save. You will be shocked! This is a must read…

My Results–

LUNCH– Currently I am eating out 4 lunches a week at $10 a pop. If I just cut that in half (and my brown bag lunches are $3 a pop) to 2 lunches out a week I save $672 a year!

DINNER– Currently I am eating out 3 dinners a week that vary from a quick run to Rubios or a relaxing dinner sipping saki and eating Albacore Special rolls. If I cut that back to eating out just once a week I could pocket, drum roll please… $960.00 a year!

That’s a grand total of $1632.00 of savings a year! Enough to get myself a ticket to Hawaii, stay at a great hotel, rent a car and drink plenty of Mai Tai’s!

Notice this calculated just my own personal savings. The reality is my whole family (3 of us) would do it as well, and our savings would be over $4,000.00.  Having gone to Maui this past fall, I can say that is plenty of money for a family of 3 to frolic on the white sands of Hawaii.

You Can Do It–

In order to actually save the money, it would be wise to calculate your monthly savings and actually set it aside by depositing it into your designated vacation savings account. (for example on the last day of each month) Otherwise the money might just get spent somewhere else like going to the movies or buying a cool gift for me. Do whatever works for you, just be sure to do something to put it aside as it’s being saved!

So if you are cutting back due to the economy and are wondering how you are ever going to get to go on vacation again, maybe this could be your solution. We are going to put this to the test. I will give you updates now and then on our progress. More importantly I will give tips and tricks to making great brown bag lunches! No peanut butter and jelly recipes here!! Stay tuned…
