Life is like a box of chocolates…

I’ve written a lot of posts on how to “gift money”. This is my latest idea with a sweet twist to it. Start by getting a box of See’s (or your favorite) chocolates. Go to a store like Cost Plus that has novelty candies. Find any money themed chocolates to add to your box. I purchased gold coins and chocolate dollar bars. As you can see how I did it in the above photo, randomly put the money chocolates with the See’s candies and then of course add the real money. This is a simple, but thoughtful way to gift money for all occasions. I created this one for a graduation celebration.

On the card you can add a fun quote like, “Life is like a box of chocolates…” finish the quote with something appropriate for the occasion.

orange dream machine smoothie

My latest addiction is the Orange Dream Machine smoothie. Until recently, I was at the mercy of Jamba Juice to get my daily fix. Since I’ve become the happy recipient of a new Blendtec, I can now make my own. (okay, I confess, my son can now make me them, haha)

There has been a lot of trial and error to get this smoothie perfected to the point that I like it just as much as the original Orange Dream Machine at Jamba Juice. My recipe is for using a Blendtec. However, I think you can get the same flavor profiles with a regular kitchen blender. You might need to adjust the juice or ice amounts depending on if it’s turning out to too thick or thin.

Ingredients: (makes 2 large smoothies)

  • 1 cup orange juice (fresh squeezed is better but not mandatory)
  • ½ cup milk or soy milk
  • 2 large scoops of orange sherbert
  • 2 large scoops of vanilla frozen yogurt
  • 1 ½ cups ice

Directions:

  1. Add the liquids on the bottom first, then the solids and finally the ice.
  2. Use the pre-programmed smoothie button if you’re using a Blendtec. (sometimes I run it twice to get a creamier consistancy) If your using a household blender, blend until it’s a creamy smoothie.
  3. Poor in a fun glass with a straw and a piece of fruit for a garnish.

Looking for a twist on apple pie? I stumbled across a great recipe, pocket apple pies. This is a perfect example of how to take a simple dessert and make it fabulous! Breakfast in a box, the perfect party favor! Imagine going to someone’s home for dinner, a cocktail party or perhaps a beautiful wedding and getting to leave with breakfast for the morning. I’d say that is hospitality at it’s finest! The ideas are endless, but to get your creative juices started I’ve come up with my own sample of an easy, but classy breakfast in a box. My version comes with scones and lemon curd, packaged in a restaurant style take-out box, with sparkly ribbons and rustic, but cool, mini clothespins. (Just add coffee)

USES:

  • dinner party favor to take home
  • to show gratitude for your babysitter, mailman, pool guy, doctor, UPS driver, neighbor, dry cleaner, gardener, accountant, etc…
  • for your significant other (sneak it bedside the night before)
  • cocktail party gift (I guarantee it won’t make the ride home!)
  • anniversary gift
Add ons:
  • add a Starbucks gift card inside
  • include coffee mugs (be sure to buy a box big enough)
  • include coffee beans or tea bags (sugars, stir sticks, honey too)
  • homemade jam

Tutorial and more photos here.

Pancakes with fresh strawberry sauce! Divinely delicious! So you get to cheat and use Bisquick or whatever your choice of instant pancake mix is. Take these would be ordinary pancakes and make them into something weekend worthy. Strawberries are still in season and can be found easily. So let’s make a homemade strawberry sauce…it’s so easy you can do it with your eyes closed! (okay, don’t try that since we’re using a stove and all)

Strawberry sauce recipe:

1. wash and slice a basket of strawberries

2. squeeze fresh orange juice from a whole orange

3. heat the orange juice in a small sauce pan on medium heat and then add the strawberries stirring often (optional: add 1 tsp sugar or 1 tsp maple syrup to make it sweeter)

4. after about 4–5 minutes shut off the stove and blend the strawberries with an immersion blender (it you prefer a little chunky texture don’t blend too much)

5. pour strawberry sauce into a glass gravy boat or creamer and serve with pancakes immediately

–Don’t forget to sprinkle powdered sugar on top and maybe add some fresh mint to pretty your plate.

–If you’d really like to make it extra, extra special, serve mimosas too! mmmmmm…

S’mores on a stick. Pure and simple genius. In recent times the cupcake has taken over the entertaining world. I am not at all saying that is a bad thing. However, if you’re anything like me (so sorry if you are!) you probably like to showcase something a little “off the beaten path”, culinarily speaking.  How perfect, yet unexpected would these S’mores on a stick be for a bridal shower, wedding favor, kids party, graduation shin dig, bbq at the park or as a hostess gift? These just may be the new “cupcake”. What I love is you can really get creative with the tags you put on them.

Tag ideas:

–Make photo tags for occasions like a graduation party or wedding.

–Use a fake movie ticket tag when you host your next movie night with friends.

–Print a tag with the recipe on the back showing how to make them.

–Add a personal quote on your tags.

–If you like simple and classy, use a monogram.

The ideas are endless. This is a really sweet idea that is also very economical. To find out what supplies you need and step by step instructions go to Elizabeth Ann Designs blog.
